Dogs certainly are amazing creatures, this is a sentiment everybody around the world can appreciate, hence the expression “the dog is man’s best friend”. For centuries mankind has utilised the ability of Canis lupus familiaris to learn, work, hunt and comfort their fellow Humans and each other; the ability of man and dog to work together is what we call a symbiotic relationship and a truly beautiful phenomenon of nature.
It has been implied by scientists that the domestication of dogs by mankind occurred when before men were agriculturally inclined but were hunter-gatherers but the exact origin of the first domestic dog is not known.
However, as the progress of humanity accelerated, dogs were not only bred via natural selection for work but also for traits regarding their aesthetic. This was at first put to use in dog shows such as Crufts in England (established in 1891), in which the owners show off the beauty of their pet and their ability to perform tricks on command.
Either breeding dogs for work or for aesthetic purposes has produced a huge variety of dog breeds, each with their own characteristics, traits and personalities. When it comes to considering a pet that will suit you I hope that you will appreciate my personal collaboration of the top 10 most beautiful dog breeds in the world.

10. The American Bulldog

To begin the list with such a beautiful breed is a treat but the fact that I place this particular breed 10th shows there is going to be a good collection ahead of you. The aesthetic of the breed is the very essence of strength and character; it looks at you with confidence and compliance.
There are two types of American bulldog: the standard and bully type, both with their own characteristics. The standard type is on average shorter and lighter than the bully type but not at all any less beautiful. A nice random fact with this breed, is that the characters Spike and Tyke from the cartoon Tom and Jerry were both American Bulldogs.

9. The Catahoula Leopard Dog

Next up: the catahoula leopard dog. A loyal working dog originally bred in northern Louisiana, the catahoula is a tough breed used to track and catch wild hogs, which explains its nickname the hog dog.
At first glance this dog gives a striking impression due to the pattern and colourisation of its fur but its appearance can vary quite considerably from individual to individual making this dog a unique breed and why it makes my top 10.

8. The Saluki (Persian Greyhound)

A breed which looks so incredibly graceful and moves with such dignity, with its wispy extensions of fur on its ears and tail this is certainly an aristocratic breed. The aesthetic of the saluki really captures my imagination, its accents of fur and slender face really imprints a noble personality onto this breed.
However this particular dog has an amazing ability, it is an insanely fast runner, galloping up to 45 miles/hour and so requires plenty of space to exercise and really unleash its potential.

7. The Shih Tzu

This pretty little ball of fur is the shih tzu, a favourite of past Chinese royalty. Another example of elegance and grace on my list, it seems to float across the floor as it moves, an illusion produced by the long silky fur that trails to the ground.
This breed is a favourite show dog for the variety of ways you can style its fur and due to its small size it is a favourite household dog worldwide.
Its name translates from Chinese mandarin to lion dog which in my opinion is so cute!

6. The Saint Bernard

The saint Bernard is an astounding breed, with masses of shag fur and drool to consider if you are thinking of taking one home. Despite its size, the saint Bernard is an adorable breed and an incredibly useful working dog. It was originally bred for rescue in the Swiss alps and Italy of which it has become famous for, stereotypically depicted carrying a barrel of brandy around its neck (which has been found to never have happened).

5. The Siberian Husky

This breed made it onto my list because of its blue or multi-coloured eyes, its handsome face mask and gorgeous fur which ranges in colour from black to copper red. The husky has a double coat which protects it from the harsh winters of Siberia and Alaska but which also reflects the summer heat.
Siberian Huskies were imported from Siberia to Alaska in the 1800’s and were bred specifically to pull sleds in snowy terrain. This made this breed extremely useful to humans who had no other form of mobility in these climates and were proved absolutely imperative for the exploration of the North Pole.

4. Doberman Pinscher

A sturdy looking breed of dog, it is praised for its loyalty and its compassion towards its family. Not only is the Doberman beautiful and can come in a variety of colours: including black, brown, fawn, blue and red but it can also be intimidating; no wonder this breed is commonly used as a personal guard dog.

3. The Poodle

He poodle is the very essence of fashion and has been a very popular pet for Europeans for the past seven centuries. These trendy dogs were originally bred in Germany and come in many forms: the standard, miniature and toy types.
Historically the poodle has always been a useful working dog as well as a beautiful show dog due to the assortment of colours and styles that can be applied to its fur. A true testament to the beauty that occurs in dog breeds, this breed deserves its place as 3rd on this list.

2. The Pomeranian

getImage
The Pomeranian is a toy dog originating from north Poland/east Germany region of Europe formally known as Pomerania. These dogs are unbelievably cute, fantastically fluffy and a bundle of fun! This breed was made popular by European monarchies owning dogs of this breed.
The tail of the Pomeranian is excessively plumed, giving this intelligent little pooch a high degree of character to its look and is why I am giving this breed 2nd place.

1. The Pug

By far the most beautiful dog breed in my personal opinion is the pug. With its stubby wrinkled face, huge eyes, curly Danish swirl tail and characteristically stubby, compact form this breed of dog was imported from china to Europe during the 16th century.
Not only are they beautiful but they make excellent pets due to their personality, for instance, they are remarkably social and great around children for their endurance and relaxed attitude.
